Research

MBarry_suppl1My main research interest lies in behavioural ecology; particularly social behaviour, communication and socio-cognitive abilities of animals. I also have a strong interest in animal welfare and conservation. For my PhD, I have investigated scent communication, aggregation behaviour and social interactions of native New Zealand geckos (Hoplodactylus duvaucelii). My current work continues to expand this line of research and focusses on social systems and social organisation of group living reptiles. In addition, I am developing a long-term research project that will assess the suitability of lizard captive breeding as a tool for conservation management by translocating captive bred and wild captured lizards and comparing their survival rate and relative reproductive performance as indicators for translocation success.
